Zero to Spearhead

The front door

Start Here

Never touched this hobby before? This is the one page to bookmark. Do these things in order and you'll go from zero to your first game — and then on to full-size Age of Sigmar.

You don't need to read the whole site. You need this page, and then you need to click through each step below, in order, when you get to it. That's it.

  1. 1

    Step 1

Work out which Spearhead box is for you

Every Spearhead box is a complete, ready-to-build army with a different feel — some are fast and aggressive, some are slow and tough, some are about magic. Read the plain-English comparison before you spend any money.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Get the extra bits you'll actually need

The box alone won't get you painting or playing. Here's the short, honest list of tools and extras — and what you can safely skip for now.

What else do I actually need? →

  3. 3

    Step 3

Set up a workspace and build your models

A tidy five-minute setup saves you a lot of frustration. Then follow the step-by-step assembly guide for your specific box.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Learn the core rules — without the jargon

You don't need to memorise a rulebook. You need to understand how a turn works and know where to look things up. Keep the glossary open in another tab.

  5. 5

    Step 5

Set up and play your first game

Table set up, terrain sorted, opponent found — here's exactly what your first game should look like, plus what to expect (including losing, probably).

  6. 6

    Step 6

    Keep going

Fix the common mistakes before you make them, and follow the Journey for my games as they happen.

After Spearhead: the road to 1,000 points

Spearhead isn't a dead end — your box becomes the core of a full-size army. Once you've played a handful of Spearhead games and want more, these three roadmaps take you there, in order:

  1. Expanding your Spearhead to 1,000 points — how to grow your collection without wasting money
  2. Transitioning to full Age of Sigmar rules — what changes, and what stays exactly the same
  3. Your first 1,000-point game — setting up and playing it

There's no rush. Plenty of people play Spearhead for months — or only ever play Spearhead — and that's completely fine.
