Building
Basing your models
By the end of this page you'll be able to get a simple, tidy base texture on your models without any specialist skills.
Basing just means finishing the round or oval plastic disc under each model's feet so it looks intentional, rather than bare grey plastic. It's a small step that makes a finished model look far more professional.
The simplest approach for a beginner
- 01
Step 1
Add texture
A thin layer of textured basing paste or fine sand glued to the base gives it a grounded, natural look and hides the join between model and base.
- 02
Step 2
Paint the texture
A single base coat, followed by a dry-brushed lighter colour over the top, is enough to make the texture read well from tabletop distance — you don't need to blend or highlight it carefully.
- 03
Step 3
Optional: add a tuft or two
A small static-grass tuft glued onto the base adds a lot of visual interest for very little effort or cost, and is entirely optional.
With building and basing done, you're ready to move on to Learning the rules.
